International Typography Competition Overview
Typographic Odyssey: The 1st Oesol International Typography Competition 2023 :

The Oesol International Typography Competition aims to showcase and promote the globally recognized Hangul language and various character designs from around the world on Hangeul Day. By hosting this international competition for typographic works, we seek to reexamine the significance of Ulsan's Bangudae petroglyphs as the prototype of letters and elevate them into new forms of visual art.

Since its inception as an invitational exhibition at the "International Typography Poster Exhibition" in 2020, the competition has traveled to three countries, including domestic museums, schools, and design institutions. We have also organized special invitational traveling exhibitions abroad, significantly contributing to the globalization of Hangeul and highlighting its value and excellence in typography design on an international stage. The Oesol International Typography Award is specifically designed to rediscover the value of Hangeul's international typographic design and emphasize its importance amidst a rapidly changing media landscape and evolving design trends. It aims to recognize creative and high-level works that showcase original inspiration, creativity, and craftsmanship, regardless of the format—be it classic, digital, or innovative implementation.

In 2023, as part of the "Oesol Hangeul Hanmadang" festival, which will again be held on Hangeul Day, we are delighted to organize the Oesol International Typography Award. We cordially invite submissions from respected and world-renowned typographers. The selected works will be showcased in a special exhibition at the Ulsan Arts Center as part of the 13th Oesol Hangeul Hanmadang festival in Ulsan this October. Furthermore, the festival will host a diverse and insightful international conference on lettering, images, and Hangeul design, featuring esteemed speakers from international and domestic backgrounds.

The competition emphasizes recognizing the value of the typographic odyssey—the conceptual integration of letters and images—through the medium of poster design. Winners will be chosen through a panel of domestic and international judges using established international evaluation standards. They will receive a total prize of US$25,000 and a certificate. The competition will award 21 grand prizes and more than 140 honorable mentions to deserving participants.

제1회 국제 타이포그래피 공모전 개최 개요:
타이포그래피 오디세이: 2023년 ‘외솔국제타이포그래피 공모전’

외솔국제타이포그래피 공모전은 문자의 원형으로서 울산 반구대 암각화의 가치를 재조명하고 새로운 시각예술로 승화한 타이포그래피 작품을 국제공모전으로 개최하여, 한글날을 맞아 세계적으로 인정받고 있는 한글과 세계 각국의 다양한 문자 디자인을 소개하고 홍보하고자 기획되었다.

2020년 “국제문자포스터전” 초청 전시회로 첫 선을 보인 후 국내 박물관, 학교, 디자인 기관을 비롯해 전 세계 3개국을 순회하며 해외 특별 초청 순회 전시회를 개최하였고 한글의 문자 디자인로써 가치와 우수성을 해외에 홍보하는 한글 세계화에도 크게 기여하고 있다. 외솔 국제 타이포그래피 공모전은 급변하는 각종 미디어 환경과 디자인 변화의 물결 속에서 한글의 국제 타이포그래피 디자인의 가치를 재발견하고 그 중요성을 강조하여 창의적이고 높은 수준의 작품을 가리기 위해 마련한 공모전이다. 보다 독창적인 영감, 창의성, 장인정신은 고전적인 형식이든 디지털 방식이든혁신적인 구현이든 결과물의 형식에 관계없이 타이포그래피 디자인을 하나로 묶는 특성화된 행사이다.

2023년 올해도 한글날에 개최되는 “외솔한글한마당” 축제 일환으로  외솔 국제 타이포그래피 공모전을 주최하고 존경받는 세계 유명 타이포그래피 작가의출품작을 모집하고 있으며, 선정된 작품은 올해 10월 울산에서 열리는 제13회 외솔 한글 한마당 축제의 일환으로 ‘울산문화예술회관’에서 특별 전시될 예정이다. 더불어 해외 및 국내 특별 강연자를 초청하여 글자와 이미지, 그리고 한글디자인에 대한 다양하고 심도있는 국제학술대회도 동시에 개최한다. 특별히 본 공모전은 포스터 디자인이라는 형식을 통해 타이포그래피 오디세이(문자와 이미지의 개념적 통합)의 가치를 국제적 평가 기준의 국내외 심사로 당선작을 선정하며, 상장과 함께 총상금 US$ 25,000 및  21개의 본상과 140여점의 입선작를 가리게 된다..
