In October, the season of abundant fruitfulness, we are pleased to announce the 2023 Outsol Hangeul Hanmadang event. Hangeul is recognized as the best of the more than 100 scripts on the planet. UNESCO recognized its value and listed it as a 'World Heritage Site' in October 1997. This is the world's recognition of Hangul's uniqueness and science and its ability to be the most advanced character for informatization.

At one point, Japanese imperialism attempted to wipe out Hangul, and Hangeul scholar Dr. Ju Si-kyung and his student, Dr. Choi Hyun-bae, risked their lives to protect our language. We are still proud of our letters and words, thanks to their dedication and hard work.

The city of Ulsan and UBC Ulsan Broadcasting have been organizing the 'Hangeul Culture and Arts Festival' since 2012 to promote the love of Hangeul by Ulsan's great hangeul scholar, Mr. Choi Hyun-bae and to further utilize Hangeul in various ways. 'Hangeul Culture and Arts Festival' every year since 2012. After the passing of Dr. Choi Hyun-bae in 2020 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his death in 2020, we changed the event's name to 'Oesol Hangeul Hanmadang' and have been holding the festival for the 12th time this year.

In addition, this year, we are holding an exhibition of lettering (typography) works that have been participated in by famous domestic and foreign artists for the past three years again in the form of a competition. The 'OSSOL International Typography Competition' is an event where graphic designers from Korea and around the world participate to showcase design works utilizing Korean characters and various characters worldwide. It will serve as an opportunity to solidify Ulsan's image as a city of letters. In addition, we expect the 'Outsol Hangeul Hanmadang' festival to expand its reach to the world and contribute to promoting the beauty of Hangeul and the image of Ulsan as the center of Hangeul culture both internally and externally.

In the future, the city of Ulsan and UBC Ulsan Broadcasting will continue developing the festival to promote Hangeul's and Dr. Oesol's achievements. We also hope this event will serve as an opportunity to strengthen the love of Hangeul further. In music, BTS promotes Hangeul to the world through music. We will promote Hangeul to the world through Hangeul artworks.

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to all the famous Korean and international artists who participated in the '2023 OUSOL International Typography Award' with their excellent works, and to the participants for their enthusiastic interest and participation.

We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to Gransan, the corporation, and Prof. Changsik Kim, who actively participated in the successful holding of this event, for their hard work.

풍요로운 결실의 계절, 10월을 맞아 ‘2023 외솔한글한마당’ 행사를 또다시 펼치게 된 것을 뜻 깊고 기쁘게 생각합니다. 한글은 지구상에 존재하는 100여개의 문자 중 가장 우수한 문자로 인정받고 있습니다.  유네스코도 그 가치를 인정해 1997년 10월 한글을 ‘세계기록유산’으로 등재했습니다. 한글의 독창성과 과학성은 물론 정보화에 가장 앞서 갈 수 있는 우수한 문자라는 것을 세계가 공인한 것이라 할 수 있습니다.

한 때 일본 제국주의로 인해 한글을 말살하려는 시도가 있었습니다. 이에 한글학자인 주시경 선생과 그의 제자인 외솔 최현배 선생 등은 목숨을 걸고 우리말을 지켜냈습니다.  그 헌신과 노력 덕분에 우리는 여전히 자랑스러운 글자와 말을 유지하고 있습니다.

울산시와 ubc울산방송은 울산이 낳은 위대한 한글학자 외솔 최현배 선생의 한글사랑을 널리 알리고 더 나아가 한글의 다양한 활용을 위해 지난 2012년부터 ‘한글문화예술제’를 해마다 열고있습니다. 이후 2020년 외솔 최현배 선생의 서거 50주년을 기념한 행사에서 행사명칭을 ‘ 외솔 한글한마당’으로 변경했고, 올해로 12번째 축제를 이어오고 있습니다.

또한 올해는 지난 3년동안 국내외 유명 작가들이 참여해온 문자작품(타이포그래피) 전시를 공모전의 형태로 다시 개최하게 되었습니다. 이번 ‘외솔국제타이포그래피 공모전’은 국내를 비롯한 세계적인 그래픽 디자이너들이 참여해 한글과 세계 각국의 다양한 문자를 활용한 디자인 작품을 선보이는 행사로 울산이 문자도시라는 이미지를 견고히 하는 계기가 될 것입니다. 또한 ‘외솔한글한마당’ 축제가 세계로 외연을 더 넓혀, 한글의 아름다움과 한글문화 중심도서로서 울산의 이미지를 대내외로 알리는데 기여하게 될 것으로 기대합니다.

앞으로도 울산시와 ubc울산방송은 한글과 외솔 선생의 업적을 널리 알릴 수 있는 축제를 더욱 발전시켜나가겠다는 다짐을 드립니다. 또한 이 행사를 통해 한글사랑을 더욱 공고히 할 수 있는 계기가 되었으면 합니다. 음악에서는 방탄소년단이 전세계인에게 음악으로 한글을 알리고 있습니다. 저희는 한글 예술 작품을 통해 전세계인들에게 한글을 홍보하도록 하겠습니다.

‘2023외솔국제타이포그래피 공모전’에 훌륭한 작품으로 참여해주신 국내 및 해외 유명 작가님들과 참가자들의 뜨거운 관심과 참여에 대해 깊은 감사 인사를 드립니다. 또 무엇보다 이 행사의 성공적 개최를 위해 적극 나서주신 사단법인 그랸샨(Gransan)과 실무를 맡은 김창식 교수님 외 관계자 분들의 노고에 머리 숙여 감사드립니다.
